Why Frames Don't Work.

Why frames don't work? More importantly, what are frames and what do they do?

Frames help us display two or more pages at the same time. Therefore, you can have a frame on the left side showing your menu and another on the right showing your content. This way you just have one page for the menu which stays fixed while your content page keeps on changing.

Now this does have its advantages.
  • You just need one page for the menu and can easily make changes to that one page as compared to changing the menu on all pages.
  • The menu remains fixed and can be seen even when the visitor scrolls down the content page

However, the disadvantages of frames outweigh the advantages.

Frames increase load time as two pages are being loaded simultaneously which can be a problem for those with slow connections.

Secondly frames take up space especially if you have more than 2 frames on a page. Imagine the effects of that at a screen resolution of 640x480.

Two scroll bars look very unprofessional. The menu frame can be put at no scroll but again there is the problem of screen resolutions, if the frame is longer than a certain size, no scrolling would mean that a lot of people cannot see the bottom half (since they would not be able to scroll). It can be very difficult to get the perfect layout using frames and making sure that they work at all resolutions.

Some search engines have a problem navigating framed sites. Therefore, using frames may mean losing out on search engine rankings.
